Millinocket, Maine, located in Penobscot County, had a 2000 census population of 5,203. In 1898, Great Northern Paper Company started constructiion of a paper mill near the convergence of the West Branch of the Penobscot River and Millinocket Stream. Today, Katahdin Paper Company operates the mill in Millinocket. In 2001, the mill's #11 paper machine was modernized at a cost of more than $100 million, making it a state of the art machine. Millinocket's largest private employer is Millinocket Regional Hospital. The hospital is one of many businesses that serve the greater Katahdin Region from their Millinocket location. Millinocket is located in the heart of the Katahdin Region, a four season recreational paradise. Local residents and tourists enjoy fishing, hunting, and hiking in and around Baxter State Park. The area boasts some of the finest snowmobiling and whitewater rafting in the state. The tourism industry employs many local residents in guide services, accomodation and food services, and retail trade. Millinocket also features Baxter State Park, home to over 200,000 acres, which includes Mount Katahdin, the tallest peak in the State of Maine (5,268-foot peak) and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. There are more than 200 hiking trails in the park, as well as three large lakes and many smaller ponds, rivers and streams. Millinocket is ranked 6th among the Top 10 Hot U.S. Travel Destinations for 2007 by the travel Web site TripAdvisor.com. A site survey showed that 43% of the TripAdvisor.com site visitors were seeking experiences that Millinocket offers, such as snowmobiling, white-water rafting and hiking.
